Touch Screen Gloves
January 13, 2012 @ 3:53:11 PM EST

Something new on the market today - gloves to keep you warm and allow you to use your cell phone outside in cold temperatures.

Cold weather in northern climates means we need to wear gear to protect our skin from the harsh elements. After receiving the Etip gloves manufactured by The North Face, and my friend received the Touch Screen glove by Manzella as Christmas gifts, we had the perfect opportunity to use and compare gloves made for working with small electronics in the cold, namely, cell phones and smart phones.

The North Face E-Tip glove fits snugly to the hand. It is made with black four-way stretch material. There are small shiny dots on the palm perhaps meant to improve grip on items such as steering wheels. There are two silver patches on the fore-finger and thumb on both gloves, which allow you to interact with your phone in a cold environment.

In using the E-Tip gloves, I find they are quite slippery on my car's steering wheel. Although you should not use your cell phone and drive, these gloves are not recommended by me for driving. Yes, you can touch your screen and scroll on your smart phone. You can even type with the same accuracy as your finger, using a more pointed fingertip action. And, the gloves are sleek enough to still use your car keys and perform other small tasks if needed, something you can't do in thick mittens.

Marketing people will tell you that branding is vital, but I object to The North Face silver logo on the back of both gloves, the name of the glove on the thumb along with the silver touch icon on the fingertips. A little too much branding in my opinion. The gloves did keep my hands warm at 30 degrees Fahrenheit but not warm enough when the temperature dipped lower.

The Manzella touch screen compatible gloves are comparable. The Men's Large/XLarge size are roomier so if you have larger hands, this might fit you better. They have three warmth levels, warm, warmer, and warmest for outdoor activities in extreme conditions or people who are cold-handed.

You are able to wear the gloves and operate your phone, as well as drive and use your keys. These touch screen gloves fit nice, and are comfortable. I can use all the controls on my truck with them. On the cell phone, I am able to swipe on a screen just fine, like a finger.  They are lightweight and warm. My fingers never got cold.

In my final assessment, both gloves are nice products and I would recommend purchasing them. As other gloves come on the market, they will be measured against these fine products.

New trojan virus!
December 23, 2011 @ 10:39:34 AM EST

I wish all viruses could be fixed this easy!!
-----------------------------------------------

So I double-clicked one of the shortcuts on my Desktop and a Anti-Virus pop-up window appeared saying that the file was infected with "Trojan-BNK.Win32.Keylogger.gen".  The pop-up looked official and it said that you should "activate" to register a copy of the anti-virus/security software.

This is where the virus gets you.  Trojan-BNK.Win32.Keylogger.gen is a fake virus warning (a pop-up window that says your PC is infected). It deceives people into downloading/installing various malware voluntarily. Trojan-BNK.Win32.Keylogger.gen is a non-existent virus. It may also prompt users to obtain a full version of fake anti-virus software in order to remove threats which do not even exist.

I am a bit computer savy and I knew NOT to click "activate", so instead I did some resaerch on the Internet.

I came across a great article that talked about how to remove this virus but it seemed WAY to easy!!  I did it anyways, and it worked AWESOME!!!!

I don't know if this works for everybody, but it did for me and this is all you have to do.

1.  Click to "activate"....yes I said click to activate :)
2.  Enter this serial number:  3425-814615-3990 (use the dashes)
3.  Push the button to "activate manually"

You know it worked when the program accepts the serial number.  That's it!!!

The next thing you will want to do is run a "Full Scan" on your computer with your anti-virus program.  If you do not have one, you can go online and download AVG Free...it's what I use.

Who knows if this removal tool works for everybody, but it worked perfectly for me, so good luck.

Spanish or German for Free
December 19, 2011 @ 4:14:42 PM EST

Learn Spanish or German for free and help translate the web.

What are you talking about? Just listened to this amazing talk from Luis von Ahn about this massive online collaboration to translate the Internet into all the major languages.

You've heard of CAPTCHA, right? Its the words you type in a box when you submit a form over the Internet. This is to prevent bots from making false entries, and ensuring a human is putting in the information.

Lately have you noticed that there are two words now in CAPTCHA? That's the latest version, and what it does is re-purpose your typing into something useful for the web, instead of a waste of your time while trying to prevent spam bots.

This re-purposing CAPTCHA with two word recognition by human-typed response helps digitize books. One of the words is a legitimate word variable, while the other word is a word scanned from a book that a computer can't recognize. When you type it in, the computer looks at all of the human responses and chooses the correct word. Voila - a book is scanned digitally and completely.

Luis von Ahn wondered how else to use small contributions by many on the Internet for greater good. At TEDxCMU, he shares how his ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions learn a new language while translating the Web quickly and accurately -- all for free.

If you go to Duolingo.com right now, you can sign up for Spanish or German. I heard there's a waiting period, but if you are patient, you'll get to be part of this massive project.

Don't miss Luis von Ahn in this video - he is very inspiring!

Buy a .XXX?
December 14, 2011 @ 12:58:48 PM EST

Can you imagine paying $1,200 for six .xxx web addresses? I can't, but UC Berkeley did according to a recent article in Yahoo.

Corny tv commercials featuring one dweeb and two over-developed starlets have introduced us to this new offering: .xxx domains. Now, I thought those domains were for porn sites, so not of interest to me since I don't work with clients who own x-rated websites. Or, perhaps the web designation is for fans of Vin Diesel and the movie XXX.

However, it turns out that others will buy the domains, put questionable content or redirects on those domains, and then use them to pull traffic and garner search results from popular, branded sites. Not a desireable scenario

I say with all the search configurations that Google, Bing, and other search engines are able to create, I'm sure they can create a filter to block all .xxx sites. And, they can do this without breaking a sweat. Being on the Internet daily for 8 hours a day, I've been blessed to not receive porn results in my queries these last few years. I call that exceptional service.

What are your thoughts on .xxx?
